This is a map of Europe which shows where Roberto traveled in Stones in Water. The stars show where he started and ended. Roberto started his journey in Venice, Italy, his hometown. He, along with his friends Samuele, Meno, and his brother Sergio were taken on a train to Munich, Germany. Samuele and Roberto were taken to another work camp after Roberto spoke up to a soldier. The book does not exactly say where in Germany this second work camp was located. After Roberto got caught stealing eggs, both he and Samuele were then sent packing again, this time to Ukraine. It does not specify in the book where exactly in Ukraine this took place, except that it was in a valley region. Then Samuele died after a fight with some other boys. Roberto ran away, and he met a young boy in a destroyed Ukrainian town. They traveled to another

town, but Roberto was shot and held hostage because the villagers thought he was German. With the help of the boy, Roberto was able to escape into the empty bed of a pickup truck. Then he was found by the truck drivers, and when he hid under some bushes to escape, Roberto found a boat. He paddled down the nearby river. After a day's worth of paddling, a Roman soldier, Maurizino, comes upon Roberto and decides to "join" him. Finally, the book ends where the two are in Romania after traveling the Black Sea.
